Video Composition of the Mundane – Part 2
Objective
Explore the foundations of non-linear video editing through hands-on learning in DaVinci Resolve.
This session focuses on learning the essential and intermediate tools in DaVinci Resolve. Everything you practice here—editing, layering, effects, and keyframe animation—will be directly useful for the third and final submission of Project 2.
The goal is to build confidence with the software so you can make stronger creative decisions in later projects.
Materials Required
- Computer with DaVinci Resolve (download here)
DaVinci Resolve is also available for Tablets through the corresponding App Store, but editing on tablets is not recommended due to limited screen space and functionality.
- Headphones (recommended for audio design)

Activities
Complete the following in order. Ask your professor or TA for help as needed.
Learn the Tools (Individual Work)
Create one short test video using DaVinci Resolve.
Before you begin, you must watch all of the tutorials: Video Editing in DaVinci Resolve.
These tutorials introduce the basic editing tools you’ll be expected to use in all video-based projects this term.
Your test video must demonstrate that you explored each tool shown.
Tutorial Breakdown & Required Application
1. Intro to Linear Video Editing
You will learn:
- Timeline navigation
- Cuts
- Imports
- Transitions
- Effects
In your test video, you must:
- Add 3–5 photos
- Adjust their size and position
- Apply at least one transition or effect
2. Intro to Video Collage
You will learn:
- Layering images
- Adding text
- Visual overlays
In your test video, you must:
- Layer 3–4 images
- Add text in two separate sections
- Apply 3–4 effects
3. Intro to Keyframe Animation
You will learn to animate:
- Position
- Opacity
- Scale
In your test video, you must:
- Use keyframe animation (at least one animated element)
- Do not rely on default transitions — show manual animation
Purpose
Your goal is exploration, not perfection.
This video simply demonstrates that you followed the tutorials and tried the tools:
- Keyframe animation
- Text
- Layering
- Effects
- Transitions
Your finished video should be 30–60 seconds long.
