Digital Mixed Media Animation – Part 3

Video compositions from previous students.

Objective

Finalize your Mixed Media Animation Composition by assembling your digitized frames into a fluid animation and enhancing it with royalty-free sound and titles.

This is your last step: bring together storytelling, analogue intervention, and digital sequencing to create a complete, expressive short film.

Materials Required

• Digitized frames from Part 2 (PNG or JPEG files)
• Computer with DaVinci Resolve (download here)

  DaVinci Resolve is also available for Tablets through the corresponding App Store, but editing on tablets is not recommended due to limited screen space and functionality.

• Headphones (for audio mixing)
• Royalty-free audio library access from Freesound.org

Activities

Complete the following activities in class. Ask your professor or TA for support as needed.

[30 min] Import Your Frames Into Video (Individual Work)

Task: Individually, assemble your analogue-enhanced frames into a short animation using the tutorial provided.

Before importing:

• Ensure all frames follow the correct naming protocol: Lastname-Image-#
• Ensure all frames are the same size and properly aligned

After importing:

• Adjust playback speed if needed to enhance pacing

  ⚠️ Make sure both of you use the same settings

• Do not add any further effects or edits at this stage

➡️ Export your animation as a short MP4 file and share with partner.

[30–40 min] Combine Group Animations + Add Sound (Group Work)

Task: Collaborate with your group to create a single, unified short film.

Review the tutorials: Video Editing in DaVinci Resolve

Instructions:

• Import individual animations into a shared DaVinci Resolve project
• Sequence them in a meaningful order (choose what flows best)
• Add Transitions and Effects if need it.
• Add:
  • Title screen at the beginning
  • End credits listing all group members
  • Royalty-free background sound that complements the tone and rhythm

Sound Design Guidelines:

• Choose royalty-free music or ambient sound from Freesound.org

  Music and audio should enhance the animation—not distract.

• Sync sound with animation pacing
• Adjust volume levels to avoid distortion

Submission Form (Group Work)

Create a 1-page PDF document that includes the following:

1. Title of the Video Composition

   Choose a clear or poetic title that reflects your work.

2. Still Image / Screenshot

   Insert a still frame from the final video that captures the mood or visual essence of your piece.

3. Short Description (3–5 sentences)

   Briefly explain your concept, what the video explores, and how you used sound and movement to build atmosphere or narrative.

4. Author Names + Short Bios

   List all group members with a 3-line description each.
